Hair Care Routine

If you jumped to this page before reading "Our Story" below is the hair care routine that worked for our daughter when she was younger battling a scalp condition.  Keep in mind we are black family, which means we do not wash our hair every day.  This routine was done every 10-14 days.

1. Clarifying Cleanser: Mix 1- 2 tablespoons of baking soda in 16-24 ounces of distilled water in a squirt bottle.

I just used a regular water drinking bottle.

Wet hair as usual.  Spray mixture onto scalp and work throughout hair for 1-2 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

2.  Avocado-Mayo Conditioner: The following is an estimate.  I never really measured the ingredients out.

1 ripe avocado, 3-4 ounces of organic coconut milk,

1 ounce of real mayonnaise, 1/2 ounce of olive or avocado oil, 1 tablespoon on honey or agave.  I used Lavender, Rosemary and Tea Tree essential oils for their properties and mask the smell.

Blend well; really well or you'll have avocado pieces floating around in the hair.  Section hair and apply mixture scalp and hair.  Comb through with wide tooth comb.  Cover with a plastic cap for 20-30 minutes. Rinse out with warm water.

Turn water to cold or as cold it can be tolerated, quickly rinse hair.  The cold water closes hair cuticles.  I don't know if its true or not, but she experience less damage and breakage when we do this step.

3.   Finish with Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse.

Mix 1oz Organic Apple Cider Vinegar mixed in 8-12 ounces of Distilled Water in a squirt bottle.  Squirt mixture onto scalp and work into hair.  Do Not Rinse.  The vinegar smell will dissipate when the hair dries.  Apple Cider Vinegar helps to restore the pH balance of the scalp.

For styling her hair, I whipped up Shea Butter with Avocado Oil, Black Cumin Seed oil, Jojoba Oil and Jamaican Black Castor Oil. I used the same oil combination to massage into her scalp 2-3 times a week.

She is a teenager.  She prefers to use our Hemp Hair Care line because it's easier than whipping everything up in the kitchen.

She does the baking soda clarifying hair cleanser once a month and always ends with an apple cider vinegar rinse after every hair washing.  When she finds the the beginnings of a patch she will do spot treatments with apple cider vinegar mix and cotton swab and oil massages.
